CEREMONY SETUP TEAM
In 2005 (I think), which was prior to the formation of the Ceremony Setup Team, we were using traditional torches for the guides to lead the candidates down the trail to the Ceremony Ring. Regretfully, one of the scout who made the torches did not understand that you had to hang the torches upside down to let the torch drain upside down so that the diesel fuel would not run down them and burn the scout's hand. About half way down the trail the torch handle caught on fire. We called it "scout flambeau." Thankfully the scout/guide (whose name I do not remember) was not seriously burned. But, that was the reason for the formation of the Ceremony Set-up Team. One of the main tasks of the team was to pass down the knowledge regarding things like how to make torches. Immokalee Lodge also had 10 custom made torch heads produced of titanium to present any diesel fuel from running down the poles. At least 2 other lodges had the sheet metal shop make them for their lodge also. The torch heads would screw onto standard curtain rods so that the rods could easily be replaced and paint, fuel, and fire would take there toll on them. |
